A Tournai tographical plate marked underglaze blue B. Decorated in colours with a 'décor de bois ' with a print depicting shipping on the Geldersekade with the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt, above the inscription Amsterdam, the wavy border outlined with gold foliage on a blue ground and with gilt line and dotted rim. The Waag (weighouse) was one of the most important secular buildings of the Middle Ages in AmsterdamIt was built as the Sint Antonies gate in 1488. In 1585 the city expanded and the gate lost its original purpose. |
