A pair of Royal Dutch Delftware Vases, signed AK=Adriaen Kocks
This pair of vases are of a most unusual shape. The covers are fixed to the main body. They are not meant to hiold flowers, but probably for feathers as part of the underglaze blue decoration consists of a band of feathers. There is one large central hole in the top of each vase. The upper rim of the vases seem to suggest a crown. (Kroonvaasjes).A similar pair of vases with the cipher RWMR(Rex William, Mary Regina) are part of the collection of Dyrham Park, England, acquired by William Blathway between 1676 and 1703. In the inventory of the Dyrham Delftware Collection of 1703 these vases are listed as "Queen Flowerpots". The shape is European(no oriental influence) after a baroque design by DANIEL MAROT (1661-1752) the architect employed by King William. |
