An oak and ebony cupboard, called "Zeeuwse Kast

A low carved oak and ebony cupboard, so-called a "Zeeuwse Kast"with cherub-heads and lion's masks. Characteristic Zeeland features are the wide , low shape and rich sculptural decoration. The lion's masks and large cherub-pilasters are elements undoubtedly derived from Southern Netherlands examples. However the clear architectural lines have been preserved, the front and sides are firmly separated, these are features with a distinctly Northern-Netherlandish air. In Amsterdam is an arch called "De Brakke Grond ", dated 1623 with very similar decoration in stone. The sculptor must have been somebody from the Southern-Netherlands. Paul Vredeman de Vries published in 1630 in Amsterdam designs for low, wide cupboards.
