|Antique furniture dealer Stodel finds important piece of history|
In 1957 the Rijksmuseum acquired an eighteen century Dutch commode from Stodel Galleries. This was not the first time Stodel was involved in purchasing Dutch antique Furniture for the Rijksmuseum. Not a lot of people are aware that Stodel as an antique furniture dealer and general antique expert helped the Rijksmuseum on several occasions. But the Dutch commode was a special piece of antique furniture that dealer Stodel sold.
The piece that Antique dealer Stodel found at first does not appear Dutch. It relates closely to a French Louis the 15 commode. There were only a few People who suspected it was not a peace of French antique furniture. Dealer Stodel made a brave move by purchasing the item England (where it was believed to be French Antique Furniture) and present it here in the Nederlands as Dutch. The Rijksmuseum was convinced that the conclusion of antique dealer Stodel about the peace was correct. The last twenty years there has been a lot of research in antique furniture. Antique dealer Salomon Stodel's insight based on experience and expertise as an antique furniture dealer has contributed to this new insight, ensuring that our picture is more in keeping with the reality of the day. Dutch marquetry furniture after French manner has remained one of antique dealer Stodel's specialisms.
