Massive baluster shaped vase

Delft, Circa 1686-1701

Origin: Delft, ‘The Greek A’ pottery

Marked: AK = Adriaen Kocks

Date: Circa 1686-1701

Dimensions: Height with cover: 74 cm

Provenance: Helmut Szprycer, Ghent, Belgium

Vases of such dimensions are too large to be placed on cabinets, but were used as cover-up pots in fireplaces. Early inventories describe such large lidded vases of Chinese or Japanese porcelain, but also Delft earthenware examples, as ‘doofpotten,’ cover-up pots. The striking blue color in combination with the high gloss glaze are reminiscent of the beloved Chinese Kangxi porcelain.

An identical vase was part of the celebrated Six van Vromade collection in Amsterdam, auctioned on 19 October 1932, lot 204.
