The mortar is decorated with two borders of round shields with sitting shield-bearers and a wild boar hunt.

Gerrit Schimmel was originally from Ochtrup in Westphalia. In 1659 he married Mecheltjen ter Horst in Deventer, a niece of the Deventer mortar caster Henrick ter Horst. She died in labour following the birth of a son. Schimmel then married Anneke Willems in 1665. He lived near the foundry on the Noordenbergschild.
