This Delft tureen was made in the form of bird with a boy sitting on top of it. Tureens like this were mostly decorative in character and used as an ornament on the dining table. The object is notable for its brilliant coloring and high gloss glaze.
The fashion for tureens shaped like animals, fruits and vegetables arose around the middle of the eighteenth century. They were especially loved in France, where the Strasbourg factory specialized in such pieces , generally larger than the examples produced in Delft.
